Race 13.1 Greensboro and BGR! National Meetup, May 15, 2016

Race 13.1 hosted the Inaugural BGR! Meet-Up at Race 13.1 Greensboro, NC on May 15, 2016!

“Race 13.1 is the southeast’s premier half marathon series that spans over 20 counties in 7 states in the southeast”.  Race 13.1 mission is “to encourage healthy living in America by bringing premier road races to mid-size communities while exceeding the expectations of our participants and giving back to the communities we serve”.   I love that they bring the perks and feel of a big race to mid size racing communities.

“In 2009, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks-Rocha created Black Girls RUN! in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority”.

Turns out I’m a brand ambassador for Race 13.1 and one of the ambassadors for BGR! Columbia, so I wanted to be there to represent on both fronts. Also, BGR participants (half marathon, 10k and 5k) received a bonus medal and pullover with their registration. I run for bling and shirts LoL. I learned shortly after the race that some of the members that registered before the deadline never received their shirts. I contacted my contact at Race 13.1 and was insured that it would be handled (Did you get your shirt?)

PacketPickup

Was just that, packet pickup. I arrived Saturday afternoon and stood in line for about thirty minutes before getting my packet. It was clear that Race 13.1 was unprepared for the volume of folks picking packets up at one time (lessons learned). Hopefully next year this won’t be a problem.

Race Day

Headed out and met over 1,400 BGR! members for our photo op (it’s just what we do lol) at 6 am that morning.

I didn’t have any expectations for this race, other than to finish what I started. Since I have found a new relationship with lifting, my running has fallen off the beaten path. I’m determined to pick it back up though. I realized how much I missed running, so I plan on incorporating 2-4 miles here and there at least twice a week into my regular scheduled program.

The course itself was a lot of rolling hills, inclines, and a couple of mountains. Funny thing is I didn’t even mind them at all. I did however mind running over half the course on concrete. Yeah I know I run on the street but there is a big difference and I surely felt that difference in my joints after the race. OUCH

Overall the race was great. The weather was perfect – chilly at start and then it warmed up quite nicely. It was awesome seeing so many people running that looked like me. BGR! was in full force!!

Race13.1 never fails when it comes to the after party 😊.  The music was jamming on the one.  They also had a nice setup for water, fruit and food.

Mesocycle 2: Week 3: Grade F

OK by far this was the worst week ever.  OK maybe not ever because we all know it was very rocky in the beginning of my training.  If I had to give this week a grade it would definitely be a F.  But it wasn’t all bad….

Week 3: Running, Old/New Friends and What Now!?!

As I’m sure you are aware….my running week restarts every Monday. Some days I have to fight with my inner self to get up and just go, but other days not so much. The first week of Christmas break was awesome…I stayed in North Augusta, SC and was able to link up with my sole sistahs of BGR! Augusta (click here for a recap of last week).   Here it was the last week of break, and I was struggling to get up to go out for an early morning run (looking forward to going back to work and getting life back on track (did I just say that LOL)).  It’s never hard for me to get up to run with someone else but week 3 was a challenge for me.  I was back home and the weather sucked the first couple of days during the week and as you are quite aware…nothing ever goes as planned….

Week 1: Lost in Unfamiliar Territory and Birthday Surprises…Beep Beep Beep

Monday was day one of my four week training plan (first phase of 12-week training) and I just happened to be in Cary, North Carolina (close to Raleigh) of all places. I arrived in Cary around 10 o’clock Sunday evening. I knew I was going to meet up with the BGR! Raleigh crew, so I wanted to turn in and be ready for my 5:00 am run. Such a great feeling knowing that you can go to a city and have a group of sole sistahs to meet up with and run run run. Woke up that morning with no issues…I was ready!!!

Even with the weather being 34 degrees, nothing was going to stop me from getting my run on (Missy’s Get Your Freak On just popped in my head 🙂 ). I was excited for two reasons; first, I was starting my training plan that my running coach created (working on speed baby) and second, I’m in a new city and I have someone to run with. #WINNING

Run Hard Lexington Half Marathon – December 6, 2014

I trained for and ran in the  Run Hard Lexington Half Marathon today.   This was the first year that Run Hard partnered with the Warm A Heart PattyPacks to bring a great race to the Lexington, SC area.

Run Hard is a non-profit running club that offers an 8-week after school running program to help prepare boys for an upcoming 5K race.  The Warm A Heart PattyPacks is also a non-profit organization that strives to assist families affected by lengthy stays in pediatric intensive care.  I really enjoy contributing to charities that are community centered.  I’m especially supportive of getting young kids moving.

One of my goals for next year is to get my son back into running.   My son and I used to run the Susan Komen’s Race for the Cure, every Mother’s Day weekend (but when they stopped funding Planned Parenthood…I stopped supporting them).   He ran a few 5k’s with me in the past so it would be awesome if we could tackle different races together in 2015 (fingers crossed).
