I heard so many good things about this half marathon that I wanted to try it out for myself.
I arrived in Myrtle Beach on Friday evening and made it to the expo to pick up my race packet and of course take a few pictures. I think this was my first time at an expo. Usually I’m just running in to pick up packet and then leaving right back out. This time I got to take in the scene at the mini expo. #noshade
This trip to Myrtle Beach was two fold….one to celebrate Veronica’s (VO’B) birthday (so after I picked up my race packet I vowed to not talk about the race until the day of the race 🙂 ) and two to run the half marathon on Sunday morning.
I was able to get in a two-mile run warm-up on Saturday morning while VO’B was sleeping.
I woke up around 4:45 am to catch the 5:30 am shuttle to the starting point. The energy was amazing throughout the entire race. I met up with my sole sistahs from Black Girls Run! Columbia and Charlotte before the start of the race (looks as though I didn’t get the memo to open my eyes for the picture LOL).
Every race I always seem a little nervous. Not really sure why because I know it’s my race my pace. I also know that every time I set out to run I always want to be better than I was the day before (so maybe that was the reason for my nerves). I started the race out in the 8:00-9:00 minute mile group and vowed to keep up. I told myself that I was not going to stop or slow down (too much) until I was finished!!!! This was my best half to date……the fast and flat course allowed me to PR way under the 2:00 hr time frame that I set out for myself. My main goal for running this race was to finish in under two hours….and I did that!!! All the training and running really paid off in my accomplishing my goal…no matter how fast the course :). #noshade
I think my stats for this race were pretty darn good if I do say so myself…..
Met up with my BGR! Grovetown running partner, Yvonne Sallis, at IHOP after the race…and what did we do….we talked about RUNNING!!!
Will I set out to do this race again next year….probably not because I doubt I could talk VO’B to spend another birthday in the same location. But maybe I can pick another location to help add a notch to my running a half in one of the 50 states before I turn 50….fingers crossed. Well I came and conquered the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon…..and got my surfboard!!!
…lingo some non-competitive runners like myself have to google…”PR” (Personal Record) – oh ok, I’ve educated myself. Nice write up SY.
